The first time this album launched (2020), I gave terrible instructions to my highly talented mastering engineer (my brother Matthew, of Matthew Anderson fame), which resulted in a final master that had limited dynamics.

If you know anything about audio production, the technical description is “flat as a pancake.” :)

I asked Matthew how he would feel about me taking a stab at remastering it myself. I’ve gotten more into music production over the last ~2 years and wanted to take a crack at it. He didn’t mind, so I started playing around with mastering compressors, subtle EQ tweaks, LUFS readings, true peak vs. RMS limiters, and de-panning of low frequencies. (Shoot me on that last one.)

I learned a few things from this process.

One, this album is so noisy (by design), it seemed to defy all good practice in mixing and mastering.

Two, mastering is black magic, and I am not a magician.

Three, I never want to do this again, but no promises!
